Enzymes in Animal Feed

Animal Feed comprises of complex Carbohydrates along with Protein and Fat. Carbohydrates provide the necessary energy for the farm animals to maintain their daily routine and production. Protein helps in tissue and muscle building activities while Fat helps to maintain Body temperature and Metabolic rate.

Monogastric Animals do not have the capacity to break down complex feed and thus unabsorbed nutrients in the feed is excreted out resulting in economic loss to farmers. Further, certain feed ingredient contains Anti Nutritional factors which trap the nutrition and make them unavailable to the farm animals. The Farm animal is thus required to break these Anti Nutritional Factors in order to access the nutrients for its growth and reproduction.

Enzymes are widely used in Animal Feed in order to help digest complex feed and also break down Anti Nutritional Factors in the feed. Animal Feed Enzymes are the most important Pro Nutrient ingredient in feed.

Enzymes are used in Poultry, Piggery and Aqua. Poultry Enzymes are used for Broilers, Layers and Breeders. Piggery Enzymes are used for Piglets, Sow and at the Finishing Stage. Aqua Enzymes are used for Fishes and Shrimp Farming.

Characteristics of Enzymes are

  • Highly  Substrate  Specific
  • Easily  Degradable
  • Highly  Environment  Dependable
  • Act  in  Minute  Quantities

Enzymes are produced by the following method

  • Produced By Microorganisms
  • Extracted  &  Purified From Fermentation Broth
  • Assayed  To  Determine  Potency
  • Formulated  To  Maintain  Stability

The Working of Enzymes is depicted below

Name of Enzymes Acts On Results in
Amylase High Starch Lower production cost
Cellulase Cellulose Fibre Cost-effective feed
Xylanase Non Starch Polysaccharides and Xylans Unlocking nutrients
Pectinase Pectin’s Better carcase grades
Phytase Phytate, Phytic acid Clean and strong eggs
Protease Proteins Higher hatchability
Lipase Oils / Fats/ Lipids Better immunity

Usage of Enzymes in Animal Feed results in the following benefits

  • Increased weight gain
  • Reduced feed consumption
  • Reduced mortality especially in disease conditions
  • Uniformity of catching weight
  • Reduced moisture in litter
  • Increased Egg Production and reduction in breakage of eggs

Tex Biosciences manufactures a variety of Multi Enzyme formulations in powder and liquid form. These formulations are a combination of Non-Starch Polysaccharide with Proteolytic and Hydrolases enzymes. All of Tex Biosciences’ enzymes are age and heat stable and can be used in the palletisation process. The company has targeted multi enzyme formulations for substrate specific diets such as corn, wheat, barley, rice bran, soya, guar meal, meat meal, etc.
